All Saints Catholic School 8th Grade Graduation

Congratulations to the All Saints Graduating Class of 2018.  For the last five years I have had the honor of being the guest speaker to the 8th grade Graduating Classes.  This year was extra special because my son is part of the graduating class and Principal MacNamara is retiring.  After making my speech, I took a little bit of liberty and read a Proclamation from the Mayor making June 5, 2018 as Antoinette "Toni" MacNamara Day in the City of Sunrise for her 19 years of ministry teaching a faith based curriculum to over 5000 students.  Congratulation to the Class of 2018 and I wish Mrs. MacNamara a very happy retirement....Commissioner Neil Kerch

Affordable Housing Advisory Board

The City of Sunrise prides itself on its ongoing culture of inclusivity. As such, the City takes an active role in ensuring and enforcing fair housing practices throughout the City. It is vital that all residents have the right to rent or buy housing, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or familial status.

Since we were having technical difficulties with the audio recorder to tape tonight's Affordable Housing Advisory Board Meeting, we decided to take some selfies while the issue was being fixed.  I really enjoy serving our residents on this very important board....Neil C. Kerch

City of Sunrise - Champions of Chess Tournament

The annual “Champions of Chess” tournament – presented by the Sunrise Center for Excellence in Chess – took place on Saturday, May 12, in the Grand Ballroom of the Sunrise Civic Center. This free and fun event was open to chess players in grades K-12. Trophies were awarded to the top 10 finishers in each division, and all participants will earn Sunrise Chess Ratings points.  "Champions of Chess" was sponsored by the City of Sunrise and the National Scholastic Chess Foundation.  The City of Sunrise was recently named Chess City USA.

The only thing more humbling than losing a game of chess to a kid, is losing a lot of games of chess to many kids.  We have some great chess talent in Sunrise and I am so proud of the City's commitment to Scholastic Chess....Neil C. Kerch

City Commission Meeting

Last nights Commission Meeting was truly inspirational.  The meeting started off with Wings for Life Ambassador Kim Ocampo making a presentation about the Wings for Life Race where all of the proceeds went to curing spinal cord injuries.  Kim is an amazing and positive person.  In 2015 she was on her way to work and was riding a bike when she was hit by a car who ran a red light. She received several standing ovations as she got up from her chair and walked (with the help of a robotic suit) to the podium to share her story.  We were able to take some selfies with her and she said anyone can follow her on instagram @kimocampo11.  Take a moment and check her out.

The Mayor then read a proclamation of Civility and we were able to recognize the Class of 2018 Leadership Academy.  These young men and women are going to be excellent future leaders.  The City of Sunrise was also recognized as America's first C-QuELL city where as a City we are committed to early child hood development.

The meeting was capped off by a Resolution supporting the municipalities which filed the lawsuits seeking a declaration that the provisions punishing elected officials for violating the preemption related to regulation of firearms and ammunition.  The vote on this resolution was a fine example of civility, where sometimes we can agree to disagree.  Voting in Favor of the resolution was Mayor Ryan, Commissioner Scuotto, and Commissioner Kerch.  Voting against the resolution was Deputy Mayor Sofield and Assistant Deputy Mayor Douglas.  At the end of the meeting we all shook hands, and we were able to move on to the next challenge or issue in Sunrise.  I am proud to serve with all of my colleagues and I believe the City of Sunrise has the most professional Commission (3 Lawyers and 2 Business Owners) in Broward County....Neil C. Kerch

Wings of Life - World Run

Today was a great lesson in that life does not always go as planned.  Due to my I-phone automatically updating the operating system last night, my alarm did not go off and I was unable to make it to the start of the race.  What do you do when you life serves you lemons? You make lemonade.

I got the I-Pad out and began streaming the "live" race from home.  I then jumped on the treadmill and ran a personal best. Although my official distance is 0.00, I am so happy to have my entry fee donated to curing spinal cord injuries.  I look forward to next years race and will make sure that the lessons learned this year are not repeated next year.  LOL....Neil C. Kerch

American Cancer Society - Relay for Life - Sunrise

I want to thank everyone who came out to Relay for Life.  As many of you know, I formed the Commissioner Neil C. Kerch team on Wednesday, April 25, 2018.  It was great to see everyone come out and support this worthy cause in the fight against eradicating cancer.  Everyone in someway has been touched by cancer.

I am proud to report that we walked a lot of laps (some a lot more than others) and our team was able to raise $800 for the fight against cancer.  Not bad for last minute.

I also appreciate seeing and feeling the overwhelming support from the community. I see that I am truly blesses to have so many friends, family members, neighbors, residents who are supporting me and my "grass roots" campaign.  Your belief in me makes me even more motivated to win the next election and continue serving our interests in the City of Sunrise.  Together we will make Sunrise the best place to Live, Work, and Play....Neil C. I wanted to congratulate the new Board for the West Sunrise Residents Association.  I offer the Board my gratitude for their commitment and service on this very important community association.  As promised, the Leisure Services Department did a wonderful job of informing the community on the plans for the school property and the future enhancements for Sawgrass Sanctuary and Oscar Wind Parks. ESRA Fish Fry

I wanted to give a shout out to the East Sunrise Resident's Association.  All the proceeds go to the 'Wayne Draper Scholarship and Education Fund" to help our local youth obtain an education. What a great way to give back to the community.

When I first ran for election back in 2013, I promised I would support the east Sunrise residents (identified as east of Pine Island Blvd.).  I listened when the residents told me at times they felt neglected and forgotten.  I shared with you that I also live east of Pine Island Blvd., and that I would work hard to change that perception. Let me share our progress.

Since being first elected in 2013, the City has invested millions of dollars into the revitalization of the East Sunrise Area.  East Sunrise Master Improvement Plan is progressing quickly.  We have a new and beautiful 12th Street Park.  Construction is nearing completion for the Complete Street Bike Lanes project, which will transform Sunset Strip from a high speed cut threw road to residential neighborhood street. Construction is starting soon for City Park.  We are continuing to make water and Infrastructure Improvements.

Going forward, I am committed to making the values of our homes increase.  For many of us, our home is our nest egg.  I am committed to finding a solution for the abandoned Gas Station property.  I am committed to University Corridor redevelopment.  I am committed to ESRA.  I am committed to the public art program starting in East Sunrise.  I am committed to making all of Sunrise the best place to "Live, Work and Play."

I am happy with the progress, but I need your help to get the job done. I need your continued support, and I need your vote on November 6, 2018."...Neil C Kerch

Sunrise Italian American Civic Association Charity Golf Tournament at the Bridges of Springtree

This was my third event on this day, and it was simply amazing.  Every year Commissioner Scuotto, his family and the Sunrise Italian American Civic Association raise money to give a local child   (who is sick, fighting cancer, has special needs, etc.) an all inclusive trip for the child and the parents to a destination of their choice.  This year the money went to a single father and his special girl.

This in itself is truly amazing; however, the event was even more special when one of Commissioner Scuotto's long time restaurant employees (Isaac who is battling brain cancer) showed up to offer his support. At the end of the evening, there was a 50/50 drawing and all of those in attendance pledged the winning ticket to Isaac.  To everyone who attended, you are all heroes.  I thank you all for allowing me to share in this experience....Neil C Kerch

All Saints Spring Picnic

I had a great time at the inaugural All Saints Church Spring Picnic.  There was great Hamburger and Hot Dogs served up by my brothers in the Knights of Columbus.  There was soccer, volleyball, frisbee, a DJ, a bounce house, and so many other games and activities.  Father Quinn even brought out the guitar and the music sheets so we could sing along.  The best part for me, was proof that the kids could have a great time without their electronic devices.  Thanks Father Quinn for making this event happen. Vivat Jesus!...Neil C. Kerch

Autism Swims in Sunrise - 9:00 am

I am so proud of Diego for coming up with the idea for this event. It was five years ago when Diego approached me with the idea for Autism Swims.  I told him you have my support but you have to come pitch it to the Commission.  The Commission unanimously approved it, and five years later, the event is better than ever.

Thanks to Diego, the entire Sunrise Swim Team, the parents, the coaches, the volunteers and City Staff for making this event so special for those with special needs.  It is so important to educate everyone about water safety because in South Florida we are surrounded by the ocean, canals, ponds, pools, and fountains....Neil C. Giving a Helping Hand

Pompano Beach Broward Outreach Center

Many homeless people start out with jobs and stable residences, but then social and economic factors intervene, causing a rapid change in their living situation. The two biggest factors driving homelessness are poverty and the lack of affordable housing.  This is why I serve on the Affordable Housing Advisory Board for the City of Sunrise.  If you really want to make a difference in the community, I invite everyone to take just 4 hours out of your year to give a helping hand to those less fortunate....Neil C. Kerch
